About the parish

The Byzantine Catholic Parish of Pozdišovce belongs to the Eparchy of Košice and is the spiritual home of Byzantine-rite faithful in the village and the surrounding area.

Our community

The parish is home to roughly 140 Byzantine Catholic faithful. The Divine Liturgy and other services are celebrated daily according to the liturgical year. The church is also shared with Roman Catholic faithful for common prayer — every second Sunday, Salesian priests from Michalovce celebrate Holy Mass here.

The parish has been led by its pastor, Fr. Marek Paľo, since 2012.

The legacy of our fathers

History of the church

The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is the landmark of the village and a silent witness to the faith of many generations.

Architecturally, it is a single-nave building with a semicircular presbytery and a projecting tower. The façades are articulated with semicircular-topped windows and a pronounced cornice. The upper part of the tower is octagonal, topped with a Baroque helm roof and lantern.

1927
The church is built and consecrated
The church was built through the efforts of Anton Tink, then parish priest of Laškovce, whose pastoral care also extended to the Pozdišovce filial church. Some sources cite 1940–1942, but local records and commemorative notes confirm 1927.
1996
The church returns to Greek Catholic hands
After years under a ban, the church building was returned to the Greek Catholic faithful by the Orthodox Church, with Bishop Mons. Ján Hirka present.
2001
The Parish of Pozdišovce is founded
On February 6, 2001, Apostolic Exarch of Košice Bishop Milan established the Greek Catholic Parish of Pozdišovce, with the filial church of Michalovce–Močarany. Pozdišovce became the first parish founded in the third millennium.
2012
Fr. Marek Paľo becomes pastor
The current pastor took over the parish's pastoral care and continues to serve it today.
2024
A general restoration
The façade and roof were restored; restoration of the iconostasis is now under way, made possible by the generosity of our benefactors.

Heritage protection
The church is not listed in the Central Register of Monuments of the Slovak Republic.
Current condition
The church is in good condition and continues to serve its purpose.

The parish's clergy

Priests of the parish

Until 2001, Pozdišovce was a filial church administered by the parish of Laškovce. The record of priests serving here stretches back to the late 18th century.

Ondrej Fabian2001–2004

The first pastor after Pozdišovce became an independent parish in 2001.

Ján Lemeš2004–2012

Continued his predecessor's work, leading the parish's pastoral care for eight years.

Fr. Marek Paľo2012–present

Pastor since 2012, actively engaged in the spiritual life of the faithful in Pozdišovce.
